Y’all come back and party with me again sometime…
Back in the day when Anissa and I were beyond broke living in Hollywood, I spent all our money to surpise her on her birthday by taking her to see BB King up the hill at Universal City walk. $150.00 a ticket, and we got to sit at a prime table (dinner included) with perfect view of the stage– that is until management / security asked us to get up, so we could feel like second class dirt bags and they could give our seats away to some “celebrities” from the Fresh Prince of BelAir tv show who showed up last minute. We were reseated somewhere less. Oh, and by the way— fuck celebrities.
Anyway, the good part of the story…….
After the show we were leaving the club and outside ran into Koko Taylor, the Queen of the Blues who opened up the show for BB King. She hit us up with such a huge, genuine smile (the kind that makes you want to hug her,) we chatted a bit and she left us with a “be sure and come back to party with me again sometime, ya hear” shout as we walked away.
The club treated us like Hollywood street trash and here one of the stars treated us like gold, and it make our night. That was over 12 years ago, and i’ll never forget Koko’s kindness.
Koko Taylor, the Queen of the Blues and of overall class in our eyes, died yesterday at age 80. Rest in peace Koko and we’ll party again someday for sure…
